Waging Spiritual Warfare

Print

If you’ve ever thought that life sometimes feels like a series of skirmishes and battles, you were right. The troubles and challenges that seem to pop up out of nowhere are no coincidence, but are a cleverly-devised scheme of the enemy designed to distract and discourage us. Lest we think this is an over-dramatization, studying the Bible reveals that we are indeed in the midst of spiritual warfare being waged against us. When we’re fighting these battles, holding fast to God’s Word and using it as a weapon gives us the victory.

Much of this battle takes place in our minds, which is where the enemy focuses his attack. The devil is unable to attack us physically; therefore, he whispers lies to us and uses suggestions as his strategy. We’re not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against authorities of the unseen world and evil spirits in the heavenly places. Thankfully, as believers who have God living in us, greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world.

Although Jesus has stripped Satan of his power and authority, the devil is always looking for ways to mount a sneak attack. However, even though we’re human, we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down strongholds and destroy false arguments the devil presents to us. When he tries to speak into our lives, we defeat him by opening up our mouths and speaking God’s Word back to him.

The world has a way of lulling us into a false sense of security and making us forget the truth about our victory over Satan. Jesus has given us power to tread on serpents, scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing can hurt us. We need to give more earnest heed to these things that we have heard, lest at any time we let them slip. This is how we wage spiritual warfare and win.

Prayer:

Lord, the devil opposes us as Your children because he opposes You and Your Son. However, he’s a beaten foe, and every time we speak Your Word, he is reminded of this. Thank You for the victory You gave us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
