Rest for the Soul and Spirit

Print

If you’ve ever felt exhausted, you know how much our physical bodies need rest in order to function properly. Likewise, our spirits and souls also need rest from anxiety and worry. To find this rest, we need God to guide us and give us His counsel so we won’t simply drift through life with no direction. On our own, we don’t even know what will happen tomorrow; life is like a vapor that appears for a while and then vanishes.

God knows both our beginning and our end. He knows all things, including what’s best for us. Trying to find our own way and determine our own destiny without His help is futile. The way of man is not in himself, and it’s not in man to walk and direct his own steps.

Depending on God instead of on ourselves helps us bypass life’s stresses and frustrations. Letting Him lead us gives us peace of mind. The kind of rest we need doesn’t come from physical inactivity, but from total trust in Jesus. When we’re laboring and feeling heavy-laden from the cares of the world, taking His yoke upon us gives us rest for our souls.

God didn’t create us to operate out of stress or anxiety, but out of rest. When the world puts pressure on us to worry, some serious labor is required to remain at rest. It’s imperative to believe in Jesus’ finished works and in the favor He has toward us. We must labor, therefore, to enter into that rest, and not fall prey to unbelief.

Having confidence in God’s grace positions us to receive the peace and joy from Him that’s unattainable through our own self-efforts. This confidence escorts us into that place of rest which puts us in a position to receive what has already been made available to us. We mustn’t cast away our confidence, which has great recompense of reward. Unwavering faith in Jesus Christ gives us true rest.

Prayer:

Lord, trusting in You gives us peace of mind and spiritual rest. Thank You for giving us instructions on how to find our place of rest in Your Son. In Jesus’ name, amen.
