Healing: One of God’s Promises

Print

Staying healthy is something many people take for granted. Normally we don’t think twice about the good health we’ve been blessed with, but it hasn’t always been this way. Under the old covenant, sickness and disease were common; they were one of the curses that resulted from Adam and Eve’s sin. Changing the situation required that God send His promised Son.

All of the Old Testament pointed to Jesus, the healer; Isaiah was one of the numerous prophets who foretold of His coming as the fulfillment of God’s promise to man. During Jesus’ earthly ministry, healing was something He did often. He traveled extensively, healing all manner of sickness and disease among people who believed in Him. He restored sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, and made the lame walk.

Under the law, the truth was that less-than-perfect obedience meant the punishment of sickness and death; however, what was true under the law isn’t necessarily true under grace. Jesus was the perfect image of God in human form, full of grace and truth. In the Old Testament, God severely judged people for bad performance. Jesus changed all that; He didn’t come to judge the world, but to save it.

Jesus redeemed us from the curse of the law by hanging on a tree, thereby replacing all the curses with blessings. In Him, the blessing of Abraham comes to everyone who believes in His willingness and ability to fully heal. Faith in Christ positions us to receive this healing in any area we need it.

He is healing and wholeness, itself. We can be grateful that our health no longer depends on our trust in what we do, but in what Jesus already did out of love for us. What Jesus said to the people He healed then is still true today: our faith makes us whole.

Prayer:

God, Your will for us is to be healthy, not plagued with illness. Your promise to us of perfect health was fulfilled in Your Son. Thank You for sending Him. In Jesus’ name, amen.
