Giving: The Proof of Our Faith

Print
Although the world doesn’t see it this way, giving is an act of faith. Giving something valuable to us to benefit others, without expecting anything in return, is an important part of being a Christian. It’s a selfless act, but can also be very scary and uncomfortable for some people to do, especially if it involves money. However, as believers, we don’t have to be afraid to give.

God is the ultimate giver and our perfect example. He didn’t give us the spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of a sound mind. He gave us His Son out of His love for us; believing this empowers us to give with the same motivation—love—to bless others. There’s no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.

The reluctance to give stems from unbelief, which results in the fear that God’s promises won’t come to pass in our lives. God promises us He’ll supply all our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. He also tells us that He is not a man that He should lie and reassures us that whatever He has said, He’ll do. The proper way to see giving is as a gain, not a loss.

The rich young ruler trusted more in his own wealth than in God, and he went away grieved when Jesus told him to give to others. By comparison, the poor widow gave generously, out of her trust in God. When we give with the right motives, it shall be given to us; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. We mustn’t deceive ourselves by doubting the promise that whatever we sow is what we also reap.

God’s grace has made available to us everything we’ll ever need for prosperous, successful lives; our faith takes those resources. Trusting Him enough to open our wallets joyfully and without cringing is proof of that faith. Our total trust in His Word frees us to give fearlessly.

Prayer:

Lord, trusting money more than You creates doubt and fear in us and hinders our faith. Your Word explains why it’s so important not to tolerate fear or let it stand in the way of our giving. We’re thankful for the examples in the Bible of how to handle money to demonstrate our faith. In Jesus’ name, amen.
