Deliverance from Self-Centeredness in Marriage Relationship

Print

What I am about to share with you may seem really radical. But here it is: How your spouse treats you is none of your business, your business is how you treat your spouse. Some of you may be thinking, “Pastor Dollar, you don’t know my spouse. He (or she) is something else!” I don’t have to know your spouse. All any of us need to know is what the word of God says about your spouse and your situation, and leave it at that. Many Believers today take things beyond the word and operate based upon the philosophy of the world instead of the wisdom of God. The philosophy of the world will tell you that finances broke up a marriage, or that things changed when the kids came along or the husband lost his job. Actually, self-centeredness is the cause of most of the divorce in the world and the body of Christ right now.

There are marriages that can be saved and marriages that can be taken to a level of love and fulfillment beyond what either spouse ever imagined, if both spouses are willing to get “self” out of the center. See, when we allow our self-centeredness to hurt our spouse, whatever we do in that moment is based upon self-preservation. We haven’t trusted God to preserve us and give us the grace for the situation. In that moment, we trust what we can do or say without His guidance. Many times Believers unknowingly take matters into their own hands and treat their spouse according to their spouse’s behavior instead of the word of God. The Amplified version of Romans 5:8 tells us that God shows and clearly proves His own love for us by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) died for us. I want you to really think about that.

You were loved in such a way that no matter what sin you committed before or after accepting Jesus as your savior, He was willing to die for you and treat you as though you never sinned. This, child of God, is love. Meditate on the scriptures provided this week and remember, how your spouse treats you is none of your business, your business is how you treat your spouse. Tend to your business, treat your spouse according to the word of God rather than their behavior, and watch your relationship begin to change for the better.

Prayer:

Lord, we are so thankful that Your word contains everything we need to successfully navigate life with You. Right now, we ask that You would give us personal revelation for our individual relationships based on the word that was shared today. We ask for your help to make our relationships the best that they have ever been, as we humble ourselves and submit to how Your word says we are to treat our spouses. Give us revelation as we meditate on the scriptures provided and apply them to our lives. It is in Jesus’ name that we pray, believe, and receive what we have asked for. Amen.
