Daily Devotionals - July 2023

“And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:27, 28).

What is lacking in so many of today’s worldly leaders is the spirit of servanthood that Jesus displayed. Being willing to sacrifice ourselves and our own interests for the sake of others is the mark of a leader with the right heart.

“But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love” (Ephesians 4:15, 16).

The only way to be an effective leader is to be willing to become a servant, the way Jesus modeled during His ministry. Whether in the church or in any other setting, love should be our motivation behind everything we do as leaders.

“And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all” (Ephesians 1:22, 23).

From a leadership standpoint, being the head of something doesn’t mean “lording it over” others from a worldly perspective. Jesus perfectly modeled biblical headship in the way He loved and nurtured the church.

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

We submit ourselves to God by yielding to the prompting of the Holy Spirit when we hear Him speaking to us, or feel Him nudging us. He gives us the strength and the power to resist the enemy and send him running in terror.

July 27

“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word” (Hebrews 1:3, NIV).

Jesus, who is the Word of God in human form, holds together everything that God created on the earth. Jesus living inside us imparts to us that same power.

July 26

“I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 1:19, 20, NLT).

Trusting in Jesus puts us in touch with a supernatural power that transcends everything the world is capable of doing or understanding. The same power that Christ received from God is at our command; we have the same ability to get results as Him.

“For He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!]” (Hebrews 13:5, AMPC).

Life can be scary when we’re trying to figure things on our own. However, we have God’s emphatic promise that He’ll walk with us every step of the way and never leave us.

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing” (John 15:5).

Jesus has promised to empower us to live successful lives and do great things. However, we can’t succeed or flourish in our own efforts, but only in Him.

July 23

“Behold! I have given you authority and power to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and [physical and mental strength and ability] over all the power that the enemy [possesses]; and nothing shall in any way harm you” (Luke 10:19, AMPC).

Believers have authority over all the tricks, tactics, and strategies of the enemy. Because of what Jesus did and our faith in it, in no way are we weak or ineffectual in the earth.

July 22

“And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease” (Matthew 10:1).

The all-encompassing authority we’ve received from Jesus even extends to the health of our minds and physical bodies. There’s no reason for us to tolerate depression, fear, or any negative emotion; neither do we have to accept sickness or disease that impacts our quality of life.

July 21

“For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:17).

The finished works of Jesus broke the power that the work of Adam once held over mankind. As born-again believers, we’ve been authorized to rule over sin.

July 20

“By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence” (2 Peter 1:3, NLT).

When we were born, God thought of every little detail that would affect us. Believers already have everything we need for a successful life; we acquaint ourselves with it all through an ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ.

July 19

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:2).

Letting God’s Word change our way of thinking frees us from the world’s limiting, constricting ways of reasoning. Our minds reside in the realm of the soul; allowing God to transform them makes us increasingly like Him.
18Jul

July 18

“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (2 Corinthians 4:3,4).

The devil, who is the god of this world, doesn’t want us to believe in God’s grace, or even to know about it. The enemy works hard to keep us ignorant and skeptical of the gospel.
17Jul

July 17

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:4, 5).

There’s an invisible war between good and evil going on that we can’t see with our physical eyes; it’s a battle over control of our minds. In this spiritual war, we must eject philosophies and ways of thinking that oppose God’s Word.

July 16

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…” (Proverbs 23:7).

We eventually become what we think. Over time, our thoughts affect what goes on our in our hearts, and subsequently the direction of our lives.
15Jul

July 15

“Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23, NKJV).

A heart turned toward God is much less likely to be tempted by the earthly things we see in life. Diligently monitoring the effect our external environment has on what we want keeps us aware of potential issues that could affect the course of our Christian walk.
14Jul

July 14

“Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye” (Mark 7:13).

The world doesn’t know Jesus, and therefore clings to many different religious traditions that contradict His Word. An awareness of the differences between God’s Word and traditional religious rites gives us biblical understanding.
13Jul

July 13

“Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ” (Colossians 2:8, NLT).

What is going on in our minds can cause us either victory or defeat. It’s therefore important to analyze and inspect what we hear from others, to ensure we’re not listening to misleading doctrines or opinions.

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper” (Psalm 1:2, 3).

Just like a plant clipping develops a root structure when it constantly stays in water, we take root and grow spiritually when we’re constantly sustained by the living water of God’s Word. This is one of God’s many promises to us.
11Jul

July 11

“No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord” (Isaiah 54:17).

Words are powerful and carry the potential to do great harm; however, they’ll never be as powerful as the protection we find in God. As righteous believers, we have the authority to condemn any words spoken against us.
10Jul

July 10

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success” (Joshua 1:8).

Our thoughts carry tremendous power. Meditating on the right thoughts—those that come from God—brings us success in life and victory over anything the devil brings.
09Jul

July 9

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds” (2 Corinthians 10:3, 4).

Our enemy, the devil, is constantly attacking our minds with thoughts contradictory to God’s Word. However, Satan’s strength is no match for the power we find when we continue to meditate on what God has spoken.
08Jul

July 8

“Since all this is true, we ought to pay much closer attention than ever to the truths that we have heard, lest in any way we drift past [them] and slip away” (Hebrews 2:1, AMPC).

We all have our own spiritual battles to fight; when we’re in the midst of one, we must hold fast to what we learned from studying the Scriptures. It’s spiritually dangerous to forget any of these scriptural truths.
07Jul

July 7

“But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection” (Colossians 3:14, NKJV).

The mark of a Christian is the unconditional love they display, which is impossible without God’s help. Relationships based on this kind of love flourish, and benefit all parties.
06Jul

July 6

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12, NKJV).

Jesus was often controversial when what He preached clashed with worldly platitudes about being God’s children. Being a child of God is not automatic; it requires a conscious decision on our part to accept Christ as our Lord and Savior.
05Jul

July 5

“Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus” (Revelation 14:12).

God’s definition of sainthood is completely different than the world’s religious definition of it. Saints are described in the Bible as those who trust in Jesus Christ and follow His commandment to love others.
04Jul

July 4

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men” (Colossians 3:23).

A good attitude isn’t just something the world approves of; it’s actually pleasing to God. Doing our best, and never just going through the motions half-heartedly, is a biblical commandment.
03Jul

July 3

“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5, NIV).

We never have to tolerate sickness or poor health the way the people had to in the Old Testament. Because of Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection, perfect health is our divine birthright as born-again believers in Christ.
02Jul

July 2

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace” (Ephesians 1:7).

Believers never have to worry about something they’ve done wrong in the past coming back to haunt them. Jesus shed His blood so that we could be forgiven for our sins and justified in God’s eyes; He now sees us as if we’ve never sinned.

July 1

“Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken” (Amos 5:14).

God tells us to seek good, which overpowers evil. He also tells us that He’s the God of all good and pure things, and in Him is no darkness. He promises that when we seek Him, He will let us find Him; when we find Him, we also find abundant life.
