Daily Devotionals - December 2023

31Dec

December 31

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9, NKJV).

We’ve all felt trapped, discouraged, or defeated before. Even in the scariest and loneliest of times, God promises He’ll never leave us. When God is with us, victory is guaranteed.

30Dec

December 30

Come and see the works of God; He is awesome in His doing toward the sons of men (Psalm 66:5, NKJV).

We can see the results of God’s handiwork. In the Old Testament, He parted the Red Sea and gave the children of Israel victory after victory in the face of overwhelming odds; today, we see His love for us in the springtime flowers, the song of birds chirping, and beautiful sunrises. This is the same God who mends our broken relationships, heals our loved ones, and speaks to our hearts about eternal life.

29Dec

December 29

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10).

The world is a dark and discouraging place, but when we follow God’s prompting in our everyday lives, we become instruments He can use to spread joy, peace, and encouragement.

28Dec

December 28

You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:14-16, NKJV).

Jesus does some of His best work through us. By sharing His love, we let God use us as vessels to spread His light in the world and be a blessing to others. In this way, we can influence others’ lives and give a powerful testimony about Him.

27Dec

December 27

We love him, because he first loved us (1 John 4:19).

Jesus brought grace, mercy, and forgiveness to us through the cross. Now that we’re living under grace instead of the Law of Moses, we can find spiritual rest knowing that His love for us doesn’t depend on anything that we do.

26Dec

December 26

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love (1 John 4:18, NIV).

Jesus ushered in a change from the old, fear-based covenant to the new, love-based covenant. In the Old Testament, we read about the fear of the Lord, but Jesus is love personified; He has freed us from fear, condemnation, and punishment.

26Dec

January 26

For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens” (2 Corinthians 5:1).

We are not our bodies; our physical body serves as our tabernacle, or house, while we’re still on earth. When we die and leave our body, a tabernacle made by God awaits us.

25Dec

December 25

O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever! Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has delivered from the hand of the adversary (Psalm 107:1, 2, AMPC).

When we have God’s wisdom, we can look back on our lives and see His hand in every situation we’ve ever faced. When we trust Him, He delivers us from our adversary, the devil, no matter what happens. We can joyfully give thanks for God’s unfailing love, mercy, and compassion.

24Dec

December 24

The rod and rebuke give wisdom, But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother. Correct your son, and he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul (Proverbs 29: 15, 17, NKJV).

Parents have a biblical responsibility to raise their children according to God’s Word. As Christians, how we train the next generation has a major impact on the world for good or bad.

23Dec

December 23

Far better to take refuge in God than trust in people; Far better to take refuge in God than trust in celebrities (Psalm 118:8, 9, MSG).

We have a choice about who to trust when trouble arises. If we trust in celebrities or “experts,” they can let us down. If we trust in the God who made heaven and earth and who sacrificed His only Son for us, He won’t let us down.

22Dec

December 22

He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, Will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy (Proverbs 29:1, NKJV).

Just like our earthly parents, God chastises, corrects, and guides us through His Holy Spirit. When we’re wise enough to listen, His guidance will save our lives.

21Dec

December 21

The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes (Psalm 118:22, 23).

During Jesus’ earthly ministry, the world rejected Him outright, refusing to accept what He did, taught, or stood for. However, what He transformed into after His resurrection is beautiful and marvelous. When we are faithful to Jesus, we’ll receive the same reaction from the world, but also take on the same marvelous beauty.

20Dec

December 20

For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law (Hebrews 7:12).

Change can be frightening when looked at from a worldly viewpoint, but it’s exhilarating when seen from God’s view. Jesus changed our covenant from the Law of Moses, which focused on sin and death, to the law of grace, which focuses on eternal life. Meditating on this spiritual law, which is the Word of God, changes us into His image.

19Dec

December 19

Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:19, 20).

Whenever we’re tempted to fear because of the turmoil around us, we can rely on God’s promise of protection from all evil and harm. He made this covenant with us because we’re His children, so no power in the universe can remove us from His safe embrace.

18Dec

December 18

Roll your works upon the Lord [commit and trust them wholly to Him; He will cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will, and] so shall your plans be established and succeed (Proverbs 16:3, AMPC).

When we trust God in every situation, He’ll renew our minds and cause them to line up with His Word. When we have the mind of God, everything we do will be successful. We will prosper abundantly.

17Dec

December 17

Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad (Proverbs 12:25, NKJV).

Providing encouragement and a kind word to others when they need support is one of the ways we can show the love of Christ. When we sow the Word into the lives of others in this way, we never know what could come to fruition months, years, or even decades later.

16Dec

December 16

The Lord shall increase you more and more, you and your children. Ye are blessed of the Lord which made heaven and earth” (Psalm 115:14, 15).

God is love, and He wants to bless us, His people, so abundantly that the world can’t help but notice. There’s no escaping God’s relentless love—His grace and favor will pursue and overtake us.

15Dec

December 15

Understand [this], my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear [a ready listener], slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry (James 1:19, AMPC).

The ability to truly listen is a gift from God that leads to wisdom and discernment. The wisdom to know when to keep silent and the discernment to resist the spirit of anger are pleasing to God.

14Dec

December 14

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy(James 3:17, NKJV).

True wisdom doesn’t originate from the world; it’s a gift from heaven. We mustn’t confuse book learning or worldly knowledge with God’s wisdom, which is perfect, righteous, and unchanging.

13Dec

December 13

The Lord hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the Lord, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more (Zephaniah 3:15).

When Jesus went to the cross and established the covenant of grace, He removed the curse that had hung over humanity since Adam and Eve. The finished works of Jesus give us victory over the enemy and guarantees us success in Him. There’s no reason to fear anything because God promises to be with us always.

12Dec

December 12

The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing (Zephaniah 3:17, NKJV).

Believers are God’s beloved children. He’ll stop at nothing to protect us and keep us safe from harm. Our focus on His love drives out all fear and anxiety. Just as a mother rejoices over her children, so He rejoices over us.

11Dec

December 11

And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him(1 John 4:16, NKJV).

Everything God has ever done, from creating the universe to sending His Son to give us salvation and everlasting life, He did out of love. God is the very essence of love, and Jesus is a perfect reflection of His Father. Never underestimate the power of love—it’s eternal, and not even death can overcome it.

10Dec

December 10

Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies... She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her (Proverbs 31:10, 27, 28, NKJV).

A godly wife who patterns her life according to the Word is a true blessing to her family. Maintaining a peaceful and well-run home can seem like an invisible task. Nevertheless, God’s values are different than the world’s values, and He sees every household.

09Dec

December 9

Behave yourselves wisely [living prudently and with discretion] in your relations with those of the outside world (the non-Christians), making the very most of the time and seizing (buying up) the opportunity. Let your speech at all times be gracious (pleasant and winsome), seasoned [as it were] with salt, [so that you may never be at a loss] to know how you ought to answer anyone [who puts a question to you] (Colossians 4:5, 6, AMPC).

As Christians, how we behave and conduct ourselves has a great impact on the way others perceive our faith. While we live in the world, we are set apart from it. When our words and actions are above reproach, we can be the beacon of light and hope that others need.

08Dec

December 8

For ‘who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?’ But we have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16, NKJV).

When we meditate on the Scriptures, we can see the mind of Christ reflected in each and every Word. Studying God’s Word and internalizing it transforms us into His image. The change begins in the mind and gradually moves into the heart.

07Dec

December 7

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things (Philippians 4:8).

We can focus on the evil, destructive things of the world or focus on the holy, uplifting things of God. The mind is a powerful tool. Whatever thoughts we harbor in our minds will eventually find their way into our hearts.

06Dec

December 6

Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him (1 John 5:14, 15, NKJV).

When we pray, we directly communicate with God, who promises to hear us. Prayer includes not just asking, but giving thanks for what He’s already done and praising Him for who He is.

05Dec

December 5

It’s impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that he exists and that he cares enough to respond to those who seek him (Hebrews 11:6, MSG).

In these last days, large numbers of people don’t believe in God; however, if we simply look around us, the evidence of His existence is overwhelming. The world’s spiritual eyes have been closed, but when believers have enough faith to seek Him, we’re able to see Him plainly in our mind’s eye.

04Dec

December 4

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage (Galatians 5:1).

True freedom and independence come from relying on Jesus and what He did for us on the cross. Because of Him, we’re free from the sin that once imprisoned us, and we can overcome the world.

03Dec

December 3

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? (John 11:25, 26).

Jesus challenged her to believe God’s promise of eternal life. We are likewise challenged to believe what we can’t see with our physical eyes. When we walk through a cemetery and view headstone after headstone to find the one that belongs to our loved one, we can remember that Jesus has conquered death on our behalf.

02Dec

December 2

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Matthew 28:19, 20).

God’s children are commanded to go into the spiritual wilderness of the world and preach the gospel of Jesus. As we do this, we can stand on the same promise that God made to Moses and the children of Israel—He will never leave us.

01Dec

December 1

And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest (Exodus 33:14).

God promised to always protect and guide Moses in the wilderness; we have the same promise today. Wherever we go in life and whatever situations we find ourselves in, God will never abandon us. We can call on Him for strength, and He will give us rest when we are weary.
