Correctly interpreting and analyzing the Bible is critical for Christians seeking to understand grace. A careful study of the books of Matthew and John is necessary so that we won’t think the Scriptures contradict themselves. One example is the theme of light; although Jesus told the people that they were the light of the world, under grace He is the true Light, not us. Getting born again means Jesus—the true Light—is living in us; we therefore will never again walk in darkness. As believers, we’re in the light because Jesus’ blood has cleansed us of all our sins; this cleansing is permanent and based on what He did, not on what we do. Even when we sin, we’re no longer sinners; we won’tsuddenly find ourselves in the dark again, having become dirty once more. Understanding this frees us from religious, performance-based thinking.
