God’s Love Letter to Us

Have you ever felt lonely or afraid, or wondered if God really cared about what you were going through? Sometimes our mistakes can make us feel beaten down and defeated. Also, when the world points out what we’ve done wrong, we ask ourselves if God still loves us. The answer to that is a resounding yes. Study the Bible, and you will see in both the Old and New Testaments that it is indeed God’s love letter written specifically to us.

When God created the earth, He made Adam, and then created Eve so Adam wouldn’t be lonely. He fashioned them in His image, and put them in charge of everything He had made. Despite the mistakes they made and the problems those mistakes caused for the following generations, God still reaffirmed His undying love. “The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee” (Jeremiah 31:3). This was written thousands of years ago to the children of Israel after they turned away from God and suffered because of it, but it’s still true today, and it applies to us.

Put another way, there are times when we’re so discouraged and exhausted from trying to accomplish something through our own efforts that we finally realize we need help. We feel like we’re in a spiritual wilderness, in the middle of nowhere. When we reach that point and ask God for His help, He’ll seek us out. “They found grace out in the desert, these people who survived the killing. Israel, out looking for a place to rest, met God out looking for them! God told them, ‘I’ve never quit loving you and never will. Expect love, love, and more love!’” (Jeremiah 31:2, 3, MSG). Grace is Jesus Himself, and we are God’s beloved children of Israel!

Love is the strongest force in the universe, and the pure, concentrated love described in the Bible overcomes anything and everything. It’s always been in existence, even before the beginning of time. It’s something we won’t truly be able to comprehend with our limited minds until we arrive in heaven. God is love, and He loved us before we were even born (1 John 4:8, 16, 19).

This theme is woven all throughout the Scriptures, and there’s no escaping it. As human beings, sometimes we try to run away from the truth, but we learn in the book of Jonah that even if we run, we can’t hide. Wise King David also acknowledged this (Psalm 139:7-16). God knows all about us—the good, the bad, the beautiful, and the ugly—and He still calls us His own.

God knows exactly what we face on a daily basis, because His Son chose to come to earth in human form. “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again” (John 3:16, 17, MSG). Jesus went through the same emotions, issues, problems, and temptations as us, so we’re never alone when we let Him guide us. God is the Author of life, and the book He wrote for us is more beautiful than any valentine we could ever receive!
