Finding Peace in the Midst of Turmoil

Life is never completely trouble-free, and sooner or later, adversity is bound to show up. The situation can look so bad we can feel overwhelmed and ready to give up. Peace of mind is far from us, and we don’t know what to do to fix the problem. The good news is that there is One Who stands ready to help, if we simply reach out to Him.

Sometimes a problem that we’ve been wrestling with takes a turn for the worse. Other times, we’re blindsided by trouble that pops up seemingly out of nowhere. Regardless of how big it seems, God is bigger. Once when Jesus and His disciples were on a ship, a storm rolled in and they feared they would sink, but He spoke to the situation. “And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?”  (Mark 4:37-40).

We learn here that it is possible to find peace in the midst of whatever storm in life we find ourselves in, if we have faith in God’s ability to rescue us. When the problems are just too big for us to handle alone, God tells us not to fear, but to trust Him. Jesus, Who is God in human form, is the Master at ushering in peace wherever He is. His birth was predicted before He made His appearance on earth.“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

Two thousand years later, He’s still bringing peace to those who trust Him. Through His Spirit, He continues to work miracles. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27). Jesus can give us what the world can’t, and when we refuse to let fear rob us of the peace He wants us to have, we’ll begin to feel it.

The world has a way of magnifying what seems like a negative and hopeless situation so much that we end up feeling defeated. But God says we don’t have to settle for that. When we begin studying what His Word says, we begin to see another side to the situation. “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Jesus, the Prince of Peace, turns defeat into victory.

When the storm is threatening, be assured that God can handle the situation much better than we can. There are things we’ll never be able to figure out, but trusting Him doesn’t require intellectual understanding. “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus”(Philippians 4:7). May peace be with you!
