In a world filled with uncertainty, violence, and unexpected tragedy, the promise of God’s protection is more relevant than ever. As believers, we haven’t been left to fend for ourselves. God has established a covenant of safety and protection for His children, and it’s our responsibility to activate it by faith. This supernatural protection isn’t passive; it’s voice-activated, faith-driven, and rooted in our relationship with Jesus Christ.
Our enemy uses fear and intimidation to defeat us, hoping that we’ll cave in and quietly submit to him. As victorious believers, we should do the exact opposite. Our words are powerful; we must raise our voices to remind him—and ourselves—that Jesus has already won the battle on our behalf. “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy” (Psalm 107:2).
Fear isn’t from God; therefore, rejecting it is an important step in activating God’s protection. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7). Fear is Satan’s tool to paralyze our faith and open the door to destruction. Allowing this emotion to settle in our hearts causes us to begin questioning God’s promises and shift into self-preservation mode. God’s covenant of protection isn’t based on our ability to protect ourselves, but on our trust in Him.
Psalm 91 is the cornerstone Scripture for understanding supernatural protection. Verse 1 says, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” This promise isn’t just for occasional visitors but for those who make God their permanent place of trust and refuge. To dwell in the secret place means to abide in Christ, as Jesus said in John 15:4: “Abide in me, and I in you...” Abiding isn’t a temporary act, but a lifestyle of continual trust and dependence on God.
Psalm 91:2 continues, “I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.” Notice the emphasis on speaking. God’s promises are voice-activated. Proverbs 18:21 confirms this truth: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue...” Declaring God’s Word activates His covenant in our lives. Saying “God is my refuge” isn’t just a confession, but a spiritual transaction that releases His protection.
God’s protection covers every area of life. Psalm 91:3, 5 says, “Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence... Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day.” Whether it’s hidden traps, deadly diseases, or acts of violence, God promises to shield us. It’s important to note that this doesn’t mention the absence of danger, but the assurance of deliverance. As the psalmist writes, “A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee” (Psalm 91:7).
God has assigned angels to watch over us. Psalm 91:11 says, “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” These angels aren’t commanded by us, but by God, Himself. They respond to His Word, not our whims. As Psalm 103:20 explains, “Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.” When we speak God’s Word, we give voice to His commands, and angels are dispatched on our behalf.
God’s protection isn’t automatic but based on our obedience to what He tells us. We must remain under His shadow. Psalm 91:9, 10 says, “Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.” This means we must choose to stay in God’s presence, trust Him daily, and not walk away from His covering. When we step out of His will or rely on our own strength, we move out from under the umbrella of His protection.
God’s covenant with us to keep us safe isn’t just about surviving but about thriving. Psalm 91:14, 16 concludes with a powerful promise: “Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him... With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.” Loving God, trusting Him, and dwelling in His presence allows Him to not only deliver us from evil but also honor us and satisfy us with long life. This isn’t a vague hope, but a covenant promise.
It’s one thing to simply read about what we should do to stay safe, but another thing to purposefully apply God’s Word to our everyday lives. We’re bound to get pushback from the world when we incorporate these strategies. Activating His protection is a daily decision. It involves:
This covenant isn’t reserved for the spiritually elite. It’s available to every believer who will trust God, speak His Word, and dwell in His presence. Our external environment is filled with chaos; God’s covenant of protection is our anchor that holds us in place and keeps us from being swept away. It’s our shield, our refuge, and our fortress.
Today, we can boldly declare: “I dwell in the secret place of the Most High. God is my refuge and my fortress. No evil shall befall me, and no plague shall come near my dwelling. I trust in the Lord, and He satisfies me with long life.”
The decision to make God our source of safety holds eternal significance. In Him, we’re safe, covered, and protected. We can either live in fear like the world or rely on God to watch over us. Choosing Him gives us perfect security.
