Overcoming Fear

Have you ever caught yourself worrying about your health after receiving a bad medical diagnosis? Bad news from the doctor, or even contemplating the possibility of it, can scare most people. However, Christians aren’t like most people. Because of what Jesus did, we don’t have to be afraid of anything—not even sickness or disease.

When it comes to adversity in our lives, health issues can get our attention in a hurry. However, what we focus our attention on affects the outcome of a situation. There’s no need to tolerate any health problems because they aren’t God’s will for us. Meditating instead on the promises He made to us concerning our health produces much better results. With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation(Psalm 91:16, NKJV.)

Believers will always face some kind of tribulation, but another promise God made to us is deliverance from every one of them. He knows exactly how to rescue the godly from trials (2 Peter 2:9, NLT). We can rely on the promises He made to us; every one of them are solid and dependable. Believing that God will never leave us when we need Him the most goes a long way in alleviating the fear that comes with wondering about the next doctor’s appointment.

We are not our bodies; we are spirit beings possessing souls and living in physical bodies. In light of this, we have the right to command good health in our bodies. Even when the situation looks bleak, God’s Word on deliverance from poor health is complete and final. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4). Jesus conquered death, then turned over that authority to us; this is the kind of assurance we need in a time of trouble.

God, who created the universe and everything in it, is on our side. He’s much stronger than any physical ailment; regardless of what the test results show, His plan for us is perfect health because He loves us. God has never been sick; we therefore have every right to claim the perfect health that He has. “…Because as he is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17).

This is a bold statement and guaranteed to bring pushback from the world, but the world knows nothing of God’s healing power. Religion has clouded the truth and deceived many Christians into thinking that it’s God’s will that they suffer sickness, because He may be punishing them for something. This isn’t His nature, and it’s absolutely false. “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth” (3 John 1:2). Much of the fear associated with medical issues is the fear that what God promised won’t come to pass for us; however, we can have full confidence that He’ll faithfully keep every promise.

Fear tolerated is faith contaminated. God uses tribulation to perfect us and teach us to trust in Him and in His love for us. “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love” (1 John 4:18). Maintaining our faith in Him, even in the midst of something, drives out fear and allows the healing that has been made available to us to take place.
