Siding with Popular Opinion vs. the Bible
Everyone is entitled to his or her own. The talk shows are full of them. What am I speaking of? Opinions. Opinions are usually harmless. Yet some are so controversial that they come with disclaimers to protect those who air the opinions but who do not necessarily share the same views as those they are presenting.
Society steadily perpetuates its views under the guise that if it is popular it is acceptable. However, it is a serious matter for a Christian to knowingly choose a worldly opinion that openly contradicts the Bible for the sake of popularity.
Here are some popular untruths, and the Bible verses that discredit them:
- People of the same sex should be allowed to marry.
“Honor marriage, and guard the sacredness of sexual intimacy between wife and husband. God draws a firm line against casual and illicit sex” (Hebrews 13:4, MSG).
- Sex outside of marriage is okay if you love each other.
“Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body” (1 Corinthians 6:18).
- Singles can enjoy oral sex. After all, it is not really sex.
“Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people” (Ephesians 5:3, NLT).
- It is all right for a couple to live together before marriage.
“But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband” (1 Corinthians 7:2, ESV).
Although Jesus said that we will know the truth and the truth will make us free, Christians, like everyone else, must be careful not to receive everything that we hear as truth. All of us, through various forms of media, are bombarded with public opinion daily. We live in an informational society, and yet society is constantly working to convince us that God’s ways are wrong. This is the same strategy Satan used in the Garden of Eden.
Satan came to Adam and Eve for the sole purpose of moving them off their stance of faith in God. He tricked Eve by speaking contradictory words against the Father. She started to reason in her mind, and soon Satan’s words made sense to her.
Satan would love for you to doubt God and His Word. It would make him quite happy for you to be undecided, distrustful, and uncertain. His m.o., or method of operation, is to deceive through the mind; it is the same tactic that he uses today.
As a Believer, you must be protective concerning what you hear and receive. You should not and do not have to accept any doctrine, view, or opinion that contradicts the Word of God.
In John 4:3, 4 (NIV), Jesus provides us with an excellent example of how to counteract the devil and his deceptions. “The tempter came to him and said, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.’ Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
Like Jesus, you too can be successful against the enemy and his lies. How? Determine to remain focused on the truth of God’s Word. Capture every contrary thought or opinion at the onset by immediately speaking against it, and aloud to yourself with a relevant scripture. This is how to feed your faith and starve all doubt. As you remain vigilant over your thought life and the opinions you allow it to form, you can live in this world and be not of it. Moreover, you cannot only fight the good fight of faith, but you can also win it!
