The Purpose of Worldly Philosophy

Summary

Philosophy is not just a subject or a department in a college or university. It is something everyone has, and it is a lens through which we view the world and make decisions. Basically, philosophy is a set of beliefs, ideas, and values by which we live. But what if we are looking at life through the wrong lens? A wrong philosophy will cause the wrong response to circumstances, and cause us to draw the wrong conclusions about life. As Christians, our philosophy must be modeled by Jesus, not by the world’s traditions.

A. What is going on in our minds can either cause us victory or defeat.
  1. We must be careful not to be taken in and deceived by traditional ways of thinking (Colossians 2:8, AMP).
    1. We cannot afford to let ourselves be carried off as spoils of war, or captured by intellectualism and deceit.
    2. Do not disregard God’s teachings. The world’s way of thinking is nothing more than idle fancies and nonsense.
    3. We must not let the devil take what God has already given us.
  2. Human tradition nullifies the Word of God (Mark 7:13).
  3. We need to keep watch over our hearts, not letting the world’s philosophy enter in (Proverbs 4:23).
  4. What we think eventually affects our hearts, and then our lives (Proverbs 23:7).
B. We are fighting a battle in which the stakes are infinitely high.
  1. There is a war going on, and it is for the control of our minds. This is a spiritual war, and we must reject philosophies that oppose God’s Word (2 Corinthians 10:4, 5).
  2. Those who are already lost will not understand the lessons of the Gospel (2 Corinthians 4:3, 4).
    1. The devil blinds the minds of those who do not believe the Word.
  3. As Christians, we cannot accept the way the world thinks. We are to let God’s Word transform our mind so that we can know God’s will (Romans 12:2, 3).
    1. Our thinking should line up with God’s Word. He gives us grace, and a generous measure of faith. And we must not think too highly of ourselves.
