Have No Fear

Have you ever caught yourself worrying about your health after receiving a bad diagnosis from the doctor? Bad news on the medical front, or even contemplating the possibility of it, can scare most people. However, Christians aren’t like most people. Because of what Jesus did, we don’t have to be afraid of anything—not even sickness or disease.

There’s no need to tolerate any health issues, because they’re not God’s will for us. We can rely on the promises He made to us; every one of them are solid and dependable. They cover not only our health, but everything else concerning us. “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises…” (2 Peter 1:3, 4).

“All things that pertain unto life and godliness” includes good health. When we trust God in this area, there’s no reason not to expect to receive the same good things He has. “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17). Sometimes we may feel that our “day of judgment” has come in the doctor’s office. However, God isn’t sick; therefore, we have every right to claim the perfect health that He has.

God has called us to stand out and be different from the world; one of the ways we’re different is that when others are sick, we’re healthy. This includes physically as well as emotionally. People who don’t understand this assume sickness is inevitable. This isn’t an issue for the believer, because God already worked out everything in advance. “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

The peace of mind we need for our recovery depends largely on how much we believe this. Faith is a powerful force doctors don’t fully understand, yet it plays a major role in the healing process. When fear shows up because of a bad report, we need to actively stand on our faith in the healing God made available for us. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report (Hebrews 11:1, 2). No matter what the situation looks like, God’s “good report” has already triumphed over what we see at the moment.

We may have heard of people who died simply because they gave up hope. However, God has already provided healing for us; contemplating this gives us hope and joy during our most difficult times. Happiness comes from how we feel, but joy comes from what we know. When we know that God wants our health restored, this knowledge colors our entire outlook. “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones” (Proverbs 17:22).

We never have to be frightened of health issues, because God loves us and wants the best for us; His best does not include sickness. Jesus Christ perfects us, and that perfection even extends to our health. “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth” (3 John 1:2). Accepting the prosperity He offers us on every level allows us to confidently and boldly adopt a “no fear here” attitude.
